Treatment focus
Excessive underarm sweating
Visit length
Assessment and mapping of the sweating area come before the injections. Your treatment plan determines visit length.

What it treats

Excessive underarm sweating
BOTOX treats severe primary underarm sweating in adults when topical treatments do not provide adequate control. The treatment acts on sweat-gland signaling in the skin.

Benefits

How sweat reduction works
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin made by Clostridium botulinum. It alters the function of certain neurotransmitters. These are chemicals in the body that instruct the body to react in a certain way. Botox blocks the neurotransmitter that tells the sweat glands to activate, to control sweating in the injection area.
Targeting the sweating area
The treatment uses small injections into the underarm skin. Your provider assesses the sweating pattern and its effect on daily activities. It does not work by relaxing underarm muscles.
Treatment plan
BOTOX is approved for severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis in adults when topical agents do not adequately control sweating. Other sweating areas do not have the same established indication.

Frequently asked questions

How does underarm Botox reduce sweat?

Botox blocks the neurotransmitter that tells the sweat glands to activate, to control sweating in the injection area. The injections are placed in the skin, rather than in the underarm muscles.

Is Botox approved for hyperhidrosis?

BOTOX is FDA-approved for severe primary underarm sweating in adults that is not adequately managed with topical agents. This is the therapeutic BOTOX indication, separate from cosmetic facial-line treatment.

When can I assess the result?

Sweat reduction develops over the first weeks. Your provider will explain the follow-up plan for your treatment.

How long does underarm Botox last?

The effect can last several months. Your repeat plan is based on when symptoms return.

Can the same claim be made for hands or feet?

The BOTOX label states that safety and effectiveness for excessive sweating in other body areas have not been established. A plan for another area needs separate assessment.

Treatment information

Botulinum toxin can cause bruising, headache, unwanted weakness, and eyelid or brow drooping. Rare spread of toxin effect can cause serious problems. Get immediate medical help for trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing.
